The Rover diesel engine was introduced in 1957 as a 2.0l, 3 bearing engine with wet sleeves. In 1961 this was replaced with the long lived piston-in-block 2.25 engine using the same block as the closely related 2.25 petrol introduced in 1958. In about 1982 this was modified to have five bearings for both petrol and diesel engines, although very few of these made it to Australia. About 1984, early in 110/90 production both engines were enlarged to 2.5l. In 1987 the diesel got an optional turbocharger. One of Rover's (now Landrover) less successful efforts, the top end was completely redesigned with outside help, and a lot of modifications made to the bottom end to produce the intercooled 200Tdi, introduced with the discovery and replacing the diesels in the renamed Discovery. In 1994 the 200Tdi was replaced with the 300Tdi - this was a complete redesign of the engine along the same lines - I have seen it said that the only common parts are the connecting rods! With this engine the engine mounts and bell housing pattern were changed making swapping the engines much more complicated. The Td5 was a further redesign changing to five cylinders, but being by the same design team has a lot of similarities.
Note that NO 2.5l Landrover diesel engines were sold in Australia prior to the 200Tdi, so these are virtually non-existent here. (The only diesel sold in 110s before the Defender with the 200Tdi was the Isuzu 4BD1, and no four cylinder petrol engines were sold in Australia - the 90 was not sold in Australia until long after the Defender name was introduced)
