    Series III Gearbox ?????

    Gday Guys
I am in the process of pulling apart the gearbox. Trying to order parts which has become a bit of a problem. The guys at Brit parts in Perth said there are a few different types, also said that it should be stamped on the casing what it is. I cant find any thing apart from casting numbers. Can any 1 help out with this. I have the standard manual, but I would like a full break down schematics any help with this would be fantastic.

    Thanks
    Bazz

    Hi Bazz,

The selector shaft cover (small rectangular cover on top of the box behind the bellhousing) has the serial number and suffix (most important part) stamped on it. This is the info they want.

Genuine gears are unfortunately no longer available, and quality can vary greatly. If it is possible to reuse yours (or get some good 2nd hand geniuine ones) I would reccommend that over buying new.

If you can post up some detailled pics of the condition of your gears and synchro hub, I am happy to give my opinion on what needs replacing (have rebuilt 3 series boxes).

If you are rebuilding the t-case as well, only buy genuine intermediate shaft bearings, the others fall apart. If you go offroad, swapping to SIIA Suffix B t-case gears will drop 1st low from 40:1 to 49:1.

The parts book is often very helpful simply because it has better pictures. There is a link to one on line somewhere on this site - I think perhaps in the Series 1 forum of all places.

    G'day Bazz67

The Series 3 G'box has the numbers on the angled face at the front of the transfer housing on the frontdrive side and will start with 941***** or similar the letter at the end (suffix) is the important bit for bearings and seals try vintagebearings@hotmail.com he is in Qld but will freight anywhere, and this guy has had 40years in the Bearing Trade so he knows what he is about Mob 0407 964 538.

I resorted to the time tested method of taking a greasy cardboard box with me containing the old knackered bits. I shop at Brit Parts too and they have seldom failed to produce something out of the back room.

    Thanks Guys.
Will try to post pics when I learn how. can some 1 point me in the right direction. As I live in Dampier WA I am a bit far away from Brit Parts in Perth. I may have to send down to them. I have found that 3rd-4th gear combinatition set up is missing one of the 3 flat spring aligners, would this be the cause of jumping out of gear when backing off the gas? the teath are pretty worn, what do you guys think?

    Thanks

    1. When you start a post or reply, scroll down to the next box headed "additional options". In there click on the button labelled "manage attachments" and follow the instructions for "upload a file from your computer"

Take careful note of the size restrictions on pictures - you will probably have to reduce the size using your image processing software (probably came with either camera or scanner)

    2. Both the missing spring and the wear are likely to cause jumping out of gear.

seconded, missing spring will, and the worn teeth will, if you have a gear that is lazy to shift into then its the wear on the internal faces of the syncro.

Uncleho I found this these numbers/letters on the side of the box. When I rang Brit Parts they said that it was not the numbers he required.
