300tdi Timing belt Fix Kit
My 300tdi is well over due for a timing belt. when I say that I mean age wise.
Motor had done 73 000kms when i bought it from a wrecker back in 2002. It is a 1994 model. Since then it has done about 20 hours work in my Series II comp rig with no issues what so ever. But I doubt the timing belt has ever been done. It doesn't have a yellow mark on the timing cover to say a kit has been fitted so i need to work out which kit it requires, problem is I don't have a VIN number. Is there any other way to find out which Kit needs to be fitted?
Also what is a Kit worth?

A yellow mark (or lack of it) doesn't necesarily mean anything. Mine had a yellow mark from the factory and was the old type of cover. One way to get an indication if the mod has been done is to look at the rear bracket for the injector pump. Part of the mod was an updated mounting had a small spacer between the bracket and the pump.I can take a pic of mine and post it if you want. The only way to really tell is to take the timing cover off. When you do the timing belt you can take the cover and bits into a Landy specialist and they will be able to tell you if it is the old or new version.

The original mod kit for the early 300Tdi is STC4095L & has a list price of $743.10 through Land Rover Australia.
This is the 'big' kit.
The smaller kit is for the later engines.
You have to bear in mind that not every engine needs the mod kit. It was only for the engines that had a timing belt wear issue. I'd suggest having a look at your belt & seeing if one edge is wearing away.
If it is, you need to do something about it. If it's not, then you don't have an alignment problem &, in theory, you can just replace the belt.
In practice though, while it's apart, you'd be better off fitting the modified parts from the small kit.
The small kit is STC4096L ($428 list).
Ring around a few of the LR shops with those part numbers & see what sort of $$ they want.
PM sent with some prices too.

I got mine done at Rumbles at Dungog. They have been fixing LR's since '52 so I would asume(spelling) they would have used a good kit.My engine was fitted with the upgrade timing gears from new so I have never had to replace the cover which I think add's to the high price. Pat

So until I pull it apart I won't know which kit I need.
If the belt is shreding itself then I need the big kit? If not I might as well put the small kit in for piece of mind??
is there any easy way to look at the belt without pulling the cover right off?? Can't really afford having the car not driveable due to space restrictions

One way is to have a look through the wading plug hole in the bottom of the cover.
If you can see belt shavings/debris, then you know you have a wear problem

Can't see any shavings/debris, but there is no plug in the threaded hole...

Yes, no plug is right but the debris won't fall out through it anyway.
Sounds like you might be lucky
