    As said it is a 7 pin flat trailer socket. However the bit underneath the pins is actually a flap that should be closed over the pins. It must have lost its spring.

    The spring is there - it's just not very effective having been caked in mud and got a bit rusty.

    The cap is normally closed. Yesterday was te fist time I'd ever opened it.

    NSW, just seems to like to use the European trailer plug, to annoy the rest of us.

    Actually, a brief foray into the world of Google reveals that both plugs are Australian Standards.
