300tdi vacuum pump fix

Here is a link to another post....But still no Ace Fix anywhere.........I think I will just take the thing off then work out what bolts I need then go shopping.....

Also can you just use goo to seal it up again instead of stuffing around making the very skinny gasket? Knowing me I will just about have it made then I will cut it and start over.....:twisted: Would need to let it go off over night of course......:angel:

No trouble doing it. It was already out of the car when I got involved. I haven't heard back as to whether it was successful but I will ask.

I successfully replaced the loose rivets with stainless nylock screw/nuts and sealed the welsh plug with a 'Silaflex' compound recommended by my local bolt supplier. Obviously I thoroughly cleaned the area with a spray for such purposes before application. That was over 150,000km ago and the vacuum pump has not lost a drop of oil since.

Hi, No problem with the welch plug either. I was able to buy one which seemed slightly larger and whilst I felt I had to be careful putting it into the alloy housing it hasn't leaked since. I have a feeling it was 7/8 inch but wouldn't swear to it.

I took the unit apart as described by others (drill and punch), replaced the offending welch plug, reassembled with the original rubber ring and loctite sealer and metal thread screws.

Have done a few and the only issue I can see is if the case hardening on the follower for the cam is damaged. I suggest you then toss the unit away.

I was at KLR Auto on Friday and I noticed on in the bin. I asked about it and Brad said they tried repairing them but it's only temporary as the one-way valve in them fails and that's why they leak.

I might grab it tomorrow when I'm up there and will pull it apart. (I can always use it as a spare for the daughter's 300Tdi).

I very belated footnote to this fix...

I did not worry about finding TDC before removing the pump. Once out, I kicked the engine over a few times and watched for the lobe of the cam in the engine that drives the pump to be on its low side. This allowed the pump to refit easily.

This might save someone the time of finding TDC etc...
