TDC is very easy to get once the viscous fan is off, the notch is only on the inside and is about 1mm deep.
My vacuum pump had suffered valve failure so the fix is of no benefit to me. I've ordered a new pump from Paddock for BUKPounds49 or AUD$85.00
If anyone knows where to get new valves and the round spikey circlip I'd be pleased to fix my broken pump for a spare.
Cheers
What year is your Landy?
Is this the part number for the one you ordered: "ERR3539" for 49.00 pounds (ex VAT)
I looked on their website and they have that Pump listed only up to 1994. Looks the same one as mine and mines a 1996 model.... so I'm assuming it's the correct one then?
Yes thats the part number. Cost is UKP49
I haven't received it yet as there was a fubar on the shipment, but expecting it next week.
My Landy is a Mar95 build, I went into the part number with Paddock, supplied VIN and engine number, and seems its the right part. I will let you know. the 300TDi uses that part, and the defender ran the same engine with the same part for a few years after 1995 so am hoping its correct.
I'll keep the old pump in case anyone can help with the new plastic valves...
Has anyone fitted a non standard Alternator with a built in vacuum pump at the end? Apparently they are much quieter than the 300TDi version, and you can plate off the pump engine hole stopping the rotten oil leak. Im aware the fan belt pulleys are different, but it should be a simple swap out with a ferule insert??
Cheers
I've got a 300TDi Defender. Can the vacuum pump be removed without undoing head bolts? It looks like my air cleaner housing needs to come off first, and it's held on with the head bolts. I don't want to jeopardise the head gasket unnecessarily.
And a couple of links, including perhaps, the ACE fix

Ok, I've got the pump off and apart. I've been able to remove the core plug by removing the plastic valve. Inside the main piston chamber I found a washer that was probably holding that plastic valve in place, and also a small crushed spring which I've managed to untangle somewhat. The current mystery is what parts make up that plastic valve assy.? I've got spring, washer and valve, but suspect there is something missing as these bits won't go together to make up something that would look to me like a working valve assy. I can't see any pictures on the web with enough detail to know what may be missing.
Or is it a bin job?
