From the lack of responses, perhaps a look on 4wdmonthly may be worth while. There seems to be a number of dodgy ones along with the decent, but worth a look anyhow.
I cant see it being that hard. Post up any ideas you end up with!
Has any one out there made a custom snorkel, I am considering having a crack at making one as I have easier access to the fabricating equipment than I do the $450+ to buy one. Photos and details would be good.

I made a snorkel for my 84 rangie out of 90mm down pipe and bends and a rectangle to round fitting cost a grand total as i had the pipe allready of 20 bucks![]()
my Rangie one is 3" exhaust pipe with a couple of 45 degree bends.
the old style Defenders ones were similar - the pipe used to come through the body where the wind top vents are in most applications.

Seen some nice ones done with stainless steel exhaust pipe- you'd need access to a mandrel bender to make it look decent.
you can get them for about $400
just bite the bullet and get one... a home made never looks as good on a Defender
