    Early 2 door Defenders

    Scuse if I sound dumb here....but I'm used to that
    In the early Defenders ( around 1993 ) I've seen advertised the 110 wagon style but with two doors only ( well three if you count the rear door ).
    What year did they stop making those and is this a real "Defender" or just a "110" model variant ?
    Is there anything else different with the two door as opposed to the 4 door ? I presume these are still springs all round etc ?

    The 2 doors are still made, they just aren't brought to australia as a normal line of vehicle.

    The 2 doors were sold here as a "hard top" compared to the 4 doors being the "wagon".

    It's a pity LR stopped importing them. They have lots of room in the back & would make a great tourer.

    Thanks .. yeah I took a look on the LR UK site and over there they still sell both the 90 and 110 in "HardTop" variant ..no windows though just solid metal .... I guess the windows are an option.
    ( still learning this LR terminology )

    great vehicle and certainly can be hard to get yours hands on one in good nick ...

    took me a few years to find one i could afford...

    Yep.. I love mine.. 95 Defender 110 Hardtop.

    Huge load area in the back. Its a big blank canvas to turn into whatever you want it to be.

    They are a little more basic in terms of trim that the 4 door variant, so they're only driven by real men :-) That said, the other loves to drive mine, though she is also deaf, so that might help :-).

    I think they stopped bringing them to Australia in 95?

    Have I mentioned I love mine?

    They sell them in Europe minus rear seats as it is cheaper to register as a 2 seater ( commercial vehicle) and in fact the last classic rangie 2 dr built was a hardtop windowless lhd model in 1994.

    Yep great rigs.....

    Ugly as hell, then you turn them into a Ute and they are the best looking rover ever built......

    The lack of windows in the UK is a peculiarity of the tax system - I think it allows it to be sold and registered at a lower rate of tax since it is a "commercial" vehicle, and the windows make it into a "car". This has never been a factor here, so hardtops always have windows.

    I dunno... They seem to get a weird striped rash when you do that.

    On Topic (though not really technical): One thing about the two doors is that the rear section tends to be a bit of an echo chamber when its empty. Thin uncovered walls (no trim) and no seats etc to absorb/damp the sound mean that the wall and roof tend sometimes act like a Rolf Harris wobble board, and it all echo's really well. Its only really bad at highway speeds if you have the wind coming from some directions.

    Theres really 2 (ok 3) solutions.
    1) Do what Inc has done, and put a layer of carpet over the ceiling, walls etc, which makes a huge difference. Check his gallery.

    2) Chuck a section of old carpet on the floor, and fill the back with crap; tools, fluids, recovery gear, swag, etc etc. Also makes a surprising difference.

    3) Turn it into a ute. :-)

    In the past it was my only car, living in both Melbourne and Alice Springs, and the only reason it became the second car was that it's too tall to park anywhere near work.
