Should be oil lubed, but don't put them in dry. Grease them lightly to give them protection until the diff oil lubes them. Make sure the diff level is correct.

I always grease mine during assembly. The oil washes some grease out, but it stays in the hub - basically a liquid grease.
I have never had a bearing fail in 11 years of driving my IIA.
Grease them for assembly as everyone else says. The original Series setup called for filling the hubs with oil after assembly but the filler plugs in the drive flanges were discontinued about the start of 2a and instructions then called for grease packing during assembly.
Bearing failures on Series are very rare and are invariably due to lubrication problems - diff oil too low, or filled with water, or oil running out of seal faster than it can get in from the diff; or the bearings too tight.

Im pretty sure that after 27 years the rears in mine are the originals.

thanks BigJon,isuzurover, jdnsw and djam1 for your advice. I have owned 2 landys over the years a 1962 shorty and a s2 ex army. One i drove around aus towing a ww2 trailer and i never had any bearing probs(only heat-noise-speed and fatigue)this one i took to the MVR in Darwin on Tuesday morn for a rego check because it hasent had rego in the NT before.I made it the 50ks in and 49.5ks back and the old landy(1980 series 3 ex army)was what i remember-slow-noisy-hot-thirsty-but fun as .Anyway the diff oil must hav been low and the rear drivers side bearing craped itself and thats that.It passed the rego check no worries.Anyway the rear ends in bits at the moment the passengers side is ok but the rear drivers side needs new bearings and some lube,so as they say in the territory-not today-not tommorrow-still waiting on some parts, cheers mickrae humpty doo
