    Question Diff Position

I was looking at a series 3 LWB in a mag and i noticed that the owner had places the diff's under the leaf spring . How has he done that ? And what mods has he done to make it fit with bump stops and shock mounts ?

extended the brake lines, modded the drag link or steering arms. then unbolted the springs flipped the shock plates end for end and put them where the axle used to be ontop of the springs(this allows you to reuse the existing shocks) extended the bumpstops and from there its just a case of cutting the mount plate off of the bottom of the axle housing welding it to the top then bolting it all up again.

I dont recommend it on a SWB but its not too bad on a LWB.

There were actually Series Land Rovers where that was standard.

However doing it on a standard Series vehicle you should modify the angle of the diffs, rotate the swivels back to avoid "bump steer" and probably need longer prop shafts with double cardan joints.

Then you will need a roll bar, for when it flips over.

I've done this using Toyota Hilux parts. Its not a straight forward operation, definately more work than it reads. Also keep in mind the chassis will interfer with the propshafts.

Here is putting the axles in:

Here is doing the hi steer conversion so you don't get that bumpsteer

The draglink axle mount was reamed to take a Rover ball so it mounts up to a standard series draglink.

In the end I aborted this setup and dropped it down again as it was too high, even when extended out to 100". This said I never drove it, but I'm now sprung under again with Toy axles and big rubber and looking a lot better and I think it'll be a better setup.

This is now where I'm at.
    Cheers

Thanks for the info I've already retensioned the springs and have the extended shackles so from the sounds of it might be to tall if i was to place the diff under the springs . still could be an option down the track if i was to put BIG tyres on the old girl

last time i checked it was ok in the NT only

but once you registered there so long as you kept the vehicle registered at all times (you could change from state to state but would need the relevant engineers cert) then you wouldnt get pinged...

once the rego lapses tho then youve got nbucklies
