they can occasionally, apparently airlock themselves if the coolant has lost its protective ability..
the latent heat in the block boils of the now less than effective coolant and it burps that out into the resivior then when it cools off it sucks a bit of air in giving you the same effect as an initial air lock.
Ive been told it can happen but IMHO if the resivior is full it shouldnt happen that way as the "lock" should suck in coolant from the resivior.
