I don't think the alloys fit over brake drums, also the drive flange is bigger and gets in the way of the alloys, centre hole of the wheel is too small.
Hi Guys
I realise Rangie/D1 alloys fit no probs.
Question is,to put alloys on an early Rangie they need studs marked with a - or a triangle,if not they have to be uprated.
I see Defenders have the - on the studs.
Are the Stage1 hubs subject to the same???
What is the difference in the studs????

Hi Jimbo
Stage1,different to Ser3,constant 4x4.Have seen them with alloys, the only Ser3's Ive seen with alloys.
Hope to get the new beast home this weekend, will be able to try one for fit.
The stud stamping is the question I really need the answer for.
Have a set of Classic Rangie alloys in the shed,if they are no good I will need to get my D1 steels back off the mrs!!!!

I think you will find that most, but not all, alloys designed for Classic RR/Disco 1, will interfere with both the hub (which sticks out more and is larger diameter) and the brake drum on your Stage 1 (or, for that matter the One Ten). Although the Stage 1 is constant four wheel drive, the hubs and brake drums are identical to other Series 3s(except that the front drums are wider on the Stage 1).

I can have the trailer this weekend So I will get it home to check.
Prefer D1 steels anyway, just means swapping tyres.

- The RR Alloys do not fit pre-1985 model Rangies. (Phase 1 RR are the ones with the quarter windows on the front doors.)
- The RR pressed steel rims will only fit onto a Series Land Rover if the Series vehicle has the early (Series 1 and Series 2 but not 2a) star pattern drive flanges on the hubs and won't fit if freewheeling hubs are present on the front axle.
- The studs on the Series 3 stage 1 are the same M16 thread so will accept the special RR Alloy wheel nuts. (The earlier series vehicles have UNF threads so won't accept the special metric nuts).
- Stage 1 V8 & 4BDI have 24 spline drive flanges, so will not accept the 10 spline star pattern flanges. (McNamara's in Melbourne, uesd to have a broach to cut 24 splines into 10 spline drive flanges.)
You can retrofit the parts from the Phase 2 Rangies to the Phase 1 without problem.
I can't help whether the RR Alloys will otherwise fit onto the Series hubs. But would like to hear the answer!!!

A couple of minor corrections. (which don't invalidate the conclusions at all)
No Landrover has ever had UNF wheel studs. All studs up to late 2a were 9/16"BSF, and went direct from there to M16, which, of course, were used by all Series 3 including Stage 1.
Not only do Stage 1 have 24 spline drive flanges - so do all long wheelbase Series 3 (all salisbury axles have them and they were fitted to the front as well when salisbury rear axles were fitted; which means to all lwb), and late production Series 3 88s also went to 24 spline drive flanges, apparently just for uniformity.

This is an interesting question and I'm always open to new knowledge.
I used to think that all Pre-Series 3 Land Rovers had (as you say) 9/16 BSF threads holding on the wheels.
Then I bought a pack of new wheel nuts from a well known U.K supplier for the restoration of my Series One.
When I went to fit said wheel nuts to said Series 1 the thread was different and very tight. Like 9/16 BSF is different to 9/16 UNF.
Now it could be that the threads were full of crud after 50+ years and I should have run the 9/16 BSF die over the threads, but I ASSumed they were 9/16 UNF.
When I get home from work I will investigate my green and white bibles.

P.S. I didn't mention the Salisbury 24 spline thing because it gets confusing and that's O.K.![]()

This is confusing I am looking at my Land Rover Series IIA Parts Catalogue Part Number 608024 First Issue Dated January 1972
On page 08 37 there is a drawing of a road wheel with a nut hanging in space, with a line from it going to 3 lines of bracketed text:
217361 (20) 1" long x 15/16" AF
561254 (20) 11/16" long x 15/16" AF
576103 (20) 3/4" long x 1 1/16" AF
The interesting thing is that the 1954-57 Land Rover 86, 88, 107 & 109 Parts Catalogue lists the same 217361 as the wheel nut as does the 1948-53 Parts Catalogue.
Spooky isn't it
