    Stopping a D1

    Hi All,

Im looking at changing my front Brake callipers from the standard one's to a bigger type, in an attemp to stop my Disco one with 35's better! I have seen it done, but unsure if you buy it as a kit or if there is a certain set you use ?

Does any one have any info ?

    Thanks in advance

Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide do a kit with ventilated rotors if that's what you have in mind. I fitted a set to my old '88 Rangie and I was very happy with the increased stopping power with no brake fade. If you'd like more info perhaps you should PM me so we don't contravene forum advertising rules.

Cheaper just to buy softer pads and change them more often.

The main problem with going for a bigger caliper is more the bigger the caliper the bigger the piston surface and the more fluid you need to move to activate the pistons so then you need a larger bore master cylinder.

You may get a larger caliper with the same size pistons but then your only really putting in larger pads which will increase your breaking performance but not by much.

Ventilated discs are great if you doing a lot of stopping from high speed but do very little off road as you dont get a lot of air flow through them anyway and they dont like water when they are hot just like any disc but are more exy to replace.

My mates D1 on 35 simex's stops pretty well for the size of wheel it's stopping, it is a bit more distance than mine on 32's but thats to be expected, not as bad as some that ive driven though.

What I've done is put D90(vented) Rotors, calipers and master cylinder on.. It actually helped quite a bit, enough so that I did it on the wifes Disco too. Mines on 35's her's is on 32's. It's a direct bolt on.. The Master cylinder is the key, Like mentioned above you need a bigger MC to move more oil. I can't quite recall the difference in Diameter of the pistons on teh caliper but it is significant. The same brakes are on 110's with the 110 converting to the vented variety in the mid 90's (?) I like the vented as there are a lot of mountains we drive down around here and brake fade can be a problem.

What GrahamH said, also you can buy a spacer kit to space out your non vented disk calipers and a set of Ventilated discs, probably cheaper to do it Graham's way, Regards Frank.

The kit I mentioned from Triumph Rover Spares comes with a pair of new (non-genuine, I believe) ventilated rotors, the spacers for the callipers, O-rings, bolts and new longer retaining pins for the brake pads AFAIK. (All parts are new.) The price is of the order of $400.

Ian can, of course also supply supply second hand parts.

Also there is a store on eBay (onlineperformance) who sell new ventilated rotors but don't have the spacers.
With Tank's reference to a source for the spacers (I'm intrigued to know more) this could be a third alternative.

Certainly, with the Rangie, I did experience severe brake fade with the standard rotors on a couple of occasions and I found that fitting the ventilated rotor kit cured this completely. But it didn't change the stopping ability of the vehicle of course, although Ian did give me new, harder pads which were more effective when hot (but I had to be careful until I'd warmed them up).

Graeme Cooper's at St.peters in Sydney sell a spacer kit, but at $380 it is a bit rich for me, spacers, bolts and O rings only, Regards Frank.

I have in my posession now a set op county brake callipers that I am wanting to convert to vented disks using the spacer.

Is the spacer the same between the Disco & County Callipers, and is it nessecary to use the county master cylinder?

    Cheers.
    Dave.
