We don't reuse them, but given the correct use of them is tight, tight, very tight, I can't see a huge drama.
Especially if you use them on a different hub than that which they were originally fitted.
I suspect the problem occurs if you don't have the bearing spacer fitted and you try to use them as a normal locknut (ie doing the job of two nuts and a lock washer). I suspect that from previous posts this is what you have done.
As an aside, I have seen a Defender with them fitted correctly, but not staked. Two had come loose (one very loose) and two hadn't.
