    Strange Noises

Hi all, my 95 Tdi Disco has develpoped a rattling noise from the trans (5 speed Manual) when the gearbox is in neutral with the motor running. It can also be difficult to get it into gear. It seems to get better after everthing is warmed up and it dissapears all together when the clutch is depressed (the noise that is). Work shop manual trouble shooting guide and a couple of guys from work suggest it could be bearings in the box that are stuffed. Opinions are sought and if this is correct is there any body that can be recomended as a repairer or supplier of repaired/recon boxes even if I have to freight it into Adelaide. I would rather repair/recon than get a 2nd hand C/O where the same problem might arise again.

If the noise goes away when you depress the clutch pedal, it's probably is the clutch throwout/thrust bearing, Regards Frank.

I think you will find it will be clutch related maybe even the clutch fork

    I second that motion.

Triumph Rover Spares are in Adelaide and they might be able to help you with a box if it is/gets more serious.

    All the best with it.

Yep the thrust bearing (clutch) is probably the culprit as mentioned above... the reason why people have suggested this is when in neutral the gearbox isn't engaged to make a noise... also a thrust bearing on the way out often makes an annoying rattle ;-)

A bit of extra info always helps!

Um, when the gearbox is in neutral, the input shaft & layshaft are still spinning.

There was an issue with early R380 boxes IIRC that was traced to loose layshaft bearings causing a rattle when in neutral (no load on the bearings).

Thanks to all this is good, any ideas on how I can tell which one it is............thrust bearing vs layshaft bearings. I'd prefer to not have to pull the box out twice. So keep the ideas flowing.

Um, correct me if I'm wrong but the layshaft/input shaft bearing could have secondary related sound of a whine when under load from the miss-aligned gears - if it is so loose that it is rattling on idling... The Input shaft bearing wont.

    Any other ideas?

I have always "suffered" from that since day one, before and after I had the clutch done (new fork and whatever bits you do at the same time)

The rattle is not too bad and never has been, it is just a bit louder and a bit rattlier.
