    3.9l rover v8 in a s2a

I have just bought a s2a with the original 2.25l petrol engine that I would like to mod.

I am looking at putting a 3.9L rover v8 with r380 transmission and lt230 transfer case into the beast.

Has anyone done something like this?

Would I have to look into "upgrading" the diffs and half shafts to handle the increased torque, or would the original s2a rover diffs be sufficient?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

what your talking about doing is doable and most of them are competition type hybrids..

take one series and one disco, rangie or deefer.

throw away all the series running gear and then grab the other vehicle take all its running gear and throw the rest of the vehicle away then mash the remnants together.

viola one series rover with lots of go fast stuff on board.

Yep you put anything much more spirited than a 2.25l in it and your definately going to have to replace the axles, diffs brakes suspension..... the whole shooting match.
if you goto a transfer case with a center diff in it its also reccomended to goto CV's as opposed to the UJs that the series rovers run.

    Help ya at all?

    Thanks for the reply.

That was what I was thinking, without using adapters etc what would be another engine, transmision, transfer case option?

    pretty much none.

but the 2.25 is pretty prehistoric theres a bit that can be done to make it a lot less agricultural...

Personally I think your mad to be rid of the 2.25 but then thats cause its what I cut teeth on vehicle wise and its got that loverly low down power curve with useable torque being produced at 500 RPM and the spec for Idling being 600rpm....

remember they aint sports cars theyre farm vehicles slow dependable and repairable.

    G'day mate,

I've done this, and to make it work well the LWB is definately the pick. I used a 3.5V8 and LT95 also. Toyota Landcruiser 60series 4.1 diffs and power steer.

Check out my website www.slunnie.com and the see gallery/technical then scroll down past the disco stuff in to the Landy stuff. Particularly "Ute2 reincarnation". Also check out the forum/series landy modifications and in there the "Ute2reincarnation" folder particularly.
    Cheers

John giles who used to own Land Rover allspares ran a 101 bellhousing on a LT95 (I think) box in a swb s3 with a 3.5 and it all went in like a bought one.The 101 housing is shorter and it positioned everything just right. He also ran standerd rover diffs. Pat

    Hi Rouge
    Look for a non-runner Series3 Stage1 V8.
You will get all the heavy duty running gear needed for the conversion.
    I just got a Stage1 V8 Wagon for $600 and A Stage1 V8 Van for $200.
These have the 3.54 diffs, constant 4wd(early Rangie,101 Forward control),the 3" wide front brakes, forward spaced radiator/long bonnet and CV joint front axles.
All the good gear you need to bolt straight up to your 3.9 V8!!!!

Can I ask what wheelbase you are talking about?

It will be a very tight fit, if even possible in an 88".

The Stage1 gear will go into an 88",where there is a will there ia a way!!!!
    Ser3 Stage1 extended bonet/grille/radiator

Plenty of room, the V8 sits further forward, your only chassis mod should be the front cross-member.
