With live axles it only takes one worn bush or loose bolt-nut to make them drive bad. Pat

I found a loose nut behind the steering wheel!
I'm doing all these changes one at a time to isolate the fault.
Left rear shock top mount is loose on the rubbers...
I notice the top 4 coils on the rear springs are bound.
car doesn't look low on the rear...
I can get all 4 springs (kings) for 250. Should I risk it?

They are variable rate springs. Theory is the top bit takes the initial bump at a low rate(180 Lbs per inch), as the spring is longer with them open. When they bind, the lower part is shorter so has a higher rate (220Lbs per inch).
Do not put extra washers into the shock mounts. They are meant to be a bit loose to allow for sideways deflection on suspension compression.
depends on your preference re springs. Aftermarket are usually stiffer and affect ride, but if you are going off road a mild lift gives better body clearance.

Should all the softer rate travel be compressed unladen? Seems a bit odd.
Is the rear suspension ball joint often an issue? I haven't had a good look at mine
I'll very rarely get into situations where I need extra clearance (90% highway commuting, ski trips and family weekends away ) so maybe long springs are a waste for me.

No, I do not think so , but they are only supposed to be a small distance apart.
You can buy aftermarket springs with a similar rate and free length But I do not think anyone does dual rate.
I have used LRA springs and recommend them.
A specialist can advise you which spring fits your criteria.

It does have twin LPG tanks and a rear quarter tank. Maybe that takes up the first stage?
Still curious about kings. I can't find warranty info on their web page.

Just rang kings
for a 40mm lift, they recommend a 220lb/in spring on the front and a 240 progressive to 340
on the rear
they have a straight 240 for the rear also
I asked about warranty
they provide a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser and will replace springs that sag more than 10mm (measured free length)

I know many here like Kings and others but I do not like companies who do not quote spring rates and free length. So I stick to LRA.
You can work it out by coil turns, wire diameter, and free length etc , but not before you buy them and may find them so stiff( most likely) that they destroy your ride.
And yes you LPG tanks etc will have enough weight to affect the springs.

Are these rates too stiff for a lightly loaded commuting disco?
