I've been using Mobil Delvac in the engine, and I thought it would make it handy to use one oil for the lot. I wasn't expecting much of a temp drop, but that would be most welcome!.

Hi Gerry,
That transfer case capacity figure isn't right, I just put nearly 4 litres in mine, not 3!!
I would say that at least you should try a synthetic 15 or 10 w 40 oil especially in high ambient temps. I am assuming alkso that all the AMF specs are also for vehicles with taper roller brg cases already, therefore heat build up won't be as much of an issue as the civilian ones.

SubscriberFrom personal experience I can tell you that EP additives will EAT bronze bushes.
When I had my LT95 pulled down in Saudi , the Bronze bushes were eaten away, not worn, from someone putting EP 90 in.
I would suggest maybe a 75W90 synthetic gearbox oil GL4 if you are sure no migration to the gearbox.( as I think its a little thicker than 20-50 when hot, so may cause gearchange problems.)
I used to put a tube of Nulon engine E20 in also, as Teflon is good in this application.

I would be very cautious about using engine oil in a gearbox or transfer case. Gear oils are different to engine oils and the viscosity ratings are not the only things you have to look out for. My understanding is that engine oil will not stand up to the chopping and squeezing of the gears. SO unless you want to change the engine oil in your transmission on a very regular basis I would not be advocating the use of engine oils in your transmission.
Plumb in an external oil cooler if you think your oil is getting too hot. The turbo on an engine is the source of a lot of heat but then again the radiator preheats all air under the bonnet and the exhaust also carries the hot gases that are going through the turbo and if close to the transmission will be just as great a source of heat. I think that there will be a fair bit of effort required to keep the engine comparment air away from the gearbox.

SubscriberI remember Graeme Cooper telling me once that a 1 or 2 inch body lift reduced transmission temps a lot.
One of those unintended consequences but a positive one.

as I said above, most modern better blended gear oils are 'buffered' to prevent this happening, particularly the synths.
Things like Syntrax, Neo 75-90HD, Motul Gear 300V, Redline, the Elf, HTX range, etc are OK or even dual rated. Even Castrol Multitrax, which is a mineral 75w-90 GL5 is fine in gearboxes (that's what it was designed for) but it will shear pretty quickly as I'm guessing it would need a fair dose of VII's to become a 75w-90.
Interestingly Mobil wont warrant their GL5 synthetic rear end lubes against bronze discolouration, much to the surprise of other industry blenders.

What does bronze discoloration look like? I dropped some oil from my LT95 x/fer to put some moreys oil stabiliser in as an experiment to see if it would lower the temps and possibly reduce some of the noise. The oil I took out was engine oil and had a very dark color through it. Its hard to explain but it was black yet still reasonably clear?? I probably should have drained all the oil
I think the Moreys reduced the whining slightly and the temps - well its hard to say without a guage. The exterior of the case is still too hot to comfortably touch after a highway run.
How much noise/backlash from an LT95 is normal/acceptable? I've been told that they all whine and all have backlash.
I would be interested to find out as well. I was told my LT95 had noisey 2,3, but ok in 4th. The TC had been re-built not long before I bought it.Have since dropped oil in both TC and main box and gone with Castrol 10W50.Did a four day trip last week and after a couple hours the floor was very hot. Expected I guess, given 30+ temp and 4hrs straight.
