Alice Springs, what a great place to spend some time. Eight years I was there.
Are the bolts holding the new housing to the inlet manifold tight and did you put #3 aviation gasket on the gasket, both sides? Is the clamp for the hose tight."No Leaks".
It is not normal, I floor the pedal in my TD5 Disco with one eye on the tacho as it revs up quick and keeps going. Something else is wrong that was not evident before you had the extra oxygen to support the extra combustion.
Is the turbo waste gate adjusted fully closed when the engine is cold and not operating? Some LR mechanics like to set the turbo boost to 12psi (maybe that's what the book says). 15psi or a little bit more is good.
If so disconnect the plug on the MAF and take it for a drive and floor it. After some hesitation from idle it should rev out. If this is the case then the MAF could be faulty.
Also check the wiring loom from the MAF and Ambient pressure sensor (air box) over the air-cond compressor as the loom tube dries out and the wires are exposed and slowly melt onto the compressor housing giving the ECU wrong voltages and hence wrong information.
If not then you still have a problem. Another cause could be the fuel pressure regulator being tired. It is what they call the fuel block at the back of the TD5 on the drivers side. If it's leaking then it is an indication. A new fuel block gave my TD5 a new lease of life.
I had a bad MAF and the problem was masked until a new fuel remap was done on the ECU, then I knew I had a problem as the TD5 "missed" badly when floored (bad MAF). Also the "tired" leaky pressure regulator also added to the problem. All this at 70,000klms.
It is also possible that the throttle position sensor could be faulty (the accelerator pedal with the intregrated potentiometer mounted on it).
Either way you are not getting:
- enough fuel;
- enough air; or
- ECU is limiting revs (by reducing fuel and/or turbo boost)
or maybe your rubber mat is bunched up behind the accelerator pedal limiting it's downward movement. Don't laugh I had that one once when I was a lot younger and fixed cars to make money.
Firstly or Lastly since you are in "The Alice" you have the option to take it to some first class LR mechanics over on Smith Street.
Hope you sort it soon.
