Someone has changed the fuel rail at some stage.
RRC has the temp sensor at the front right, Disco about 1/2 way along the left rail.

My vehicle has a boss for it on the fuel rail but no injector type plug on the passenger side. There is however a loose injector type plug on the driver side of the plenum chamber. What would be a reason for not having the fuel temperature sensor when there should be one? even if I bought a sensor, I couldn't plug it in....

You might be able to see the vacant Fuel Temp boss in this heavily resized photo...

Maybe someone changed to loom for a RRC one. It is no big deal to extend the wires so that the loom reaches. The sensor boss is correct for a Disco.
You may find that someone has just run the loom along the RH side of the plenum and could not be bothered to undo everything to route it correctly.
This would be my bet. Where is the sensor?
You need this to have a 14CUX run 100%, and seeing it appears to have a MAF it should still be a 14CUX.

Bought the car in 03. The sensor was not there to begin with. Might chat to an auto elec. about the loom, but how do I know which loom? Though there is only one loose loom on the opposing side of the plenum chamber, so I'm guessing that's the one?
The car gets about 400-550 k's to a tank and idles/runs really nice, but the starting really annoys me! I'm thinking that this may have something to do with the starting difficulty. Starts great really hot or if left unused for a week. I once left it at the airport for 7 weeks. Got into the car dreading the worst but it started at the turn of the key. Everything has been checked and things replaced but never successful in sorting this problem out.

If there are 2 wires with an injector plug at the end, you can be pretty sure its the one.

That's the one I saw mate. It's wired together with one of the injector leads. Wondering if it's possible to cut the plug and solder an extension?
The fuel temp sensor is used when the engine is being started. If the fuel in the fuel rail is already hot, the ECU knows a hot engine is being re-started, and can adjust the mixture accordingly.
This could be the cause of your starting probs when the engine is warm.
Also, the sensor doesn't come into contact with fuel so you can replace it easily.

I love it when a plan comes together!

Just cut the wires and add a bit in.

I've had the loom extended and connected the sensor today. Will the sensor just be picked up by the ECU or do I need to have it reset for the sensor to start working in conjunction with everything else??
