Very Nice, I wonder how you would go engineering them in Vic, I recon it's a much safer way of getting lift and bigger tyres on than a body/suspention lift.

Seen as Maxi drive aren't doin them anymore Volvo 303-304 seem to be the way to go.But I'm not allowed them till I sell My VTR1000SP1
Maxi drive bolt ons at $15k a set of 4 is good value when considering MOG 404's are about 2600 pounds an axle buy the time you do the change over with freight,, Maxis are better value. Be nice to have a set and get the chinese to copy them and then probably get the whole set for $5k and last you two outtings

looking for portals and i found these on pirate4x4
the price was a lot less than maxi's,
they custom make them to order, from mild to wild(spline counts/axle material/tube thickness/cv's etc)
and using the 9 inch with its worldwide reputation is pretty smart, not to mention all the ratios available.

how much $$ to build two rover axles with suitable centre.s,say 4.3 r&p,upgraded cv's,axles etc.
now add the body lift, suss lift etc
and the diff centres are still 2 inches lower

To be fair though, if you do the portals you'd then need to add the cost/time of tailshafts, link and mount fabrication, brakes conversion, steering conversion, spring/shocks mounts, rims and tyre fitment

I think refurbished Mogs are about $5-6k landed for a set.

You are right, there are places selling 404 axles pairs for aboutr $5k landed, but then you need to (at minimum):
Cut and flip the front so the diff centre is on the correct side (including at least 1 custom axle).
    Do a pinion conversion.
    Weld on all the mounts.

But that said, you should be able to have a pair bolted in for $10-12k - even paying someone else to do the mod work.

True, I'd forgotten about that stuff.

Do you know how expensive or hard it is to convert the front mog diff to DS drop? I assume its a bit more than flipping the front housing and diff centre and then remounting the portals.

Its definately a better way, but I wouldn't say safer, it raises the COG more so than a body lift, and a little more than a suspension lift

This might be a dumb Friday night question, but if you fitted portals wouldn't you have 5 speeds in reverse and 1 forward?

Or, are there 2 sets of gears inside each head to make the axles go the same direction as originally intended?

    Hope that makes sense.....
