    where to put second battery - defedner TD5

    Hi all, my second battery has died and I need to replace it. Problem is I can't find a small one that fits under the seat with the primary battery. I had a small deep cycle optima battery but apparently they are out of service now. Also, I'm in Broome and on my way to Perth so hard to find a big battery outlet..

    any ideas??

    I've seen some installs where the second battery was almost as big as the main, but it looked a very tight squeeze. I faced the same dilemma, but in the end, just dug deep and bought two new batteries of appropriate sizes (Exide Orbitals in my case) so they fitted how I wanted them - I figured the main was probably at least halfway through it's life, so not too bad an idea to get two new ones.

    I am not sure on the size hole you have for the battery, but would it be possible to mount a fully sealed battery on it's side? Just trying to think outside the square. I know they mount some 2nd batteries under bonnet on their side. Don't know if this will help though.

    you can get the 2 full size batteries under the seat running them north south

    precautions to take... (read em all first they aint in any particular order but all need considering)

    1 get the terminals with different layouts so that when you put the batteries in the earths are in the center at the back and the posatives are at the front in the center.

    2. Install the outside battery first but bluetack the retaining clamp in place before you install it.

    3. move the seat all the way forwards when doing the front posative terminal clamps.

    4. move it all the way back to do the earths.

    5. before you discconnect the batteries in the first place get a small 12v battery with a 5 amp fuse in line with a pair of alligator clips and put that onto the output terminal of the alternator and a good engine earth point....

    6. DONT short the +ve terminals to earth and if youve got one use an insualated spanner and screwdriver for playing with the terminals.
