    Can't find that noise!!

    Have spent some dollars lateley, New alternater bearing was shot, new water pump bearing was shot, new belt tensioner the lot was shot, new serpentine belt, runs beautiful on idle but, there is still a whiring type noise there just after idle, you hear it more when you back off in top gear and then just put the foot down ever so slightley' wondering if it could be the viscous hub there is a bit of movement in it

    Oh! its a 300tdi, Any ideas?, before i shoot this thing!,

    Get a can of CRC or INOX, start the car, get the noise going and then spray onto different parts (use the nozzle) to see if you can make the noise disappear. That may help diagnose the source. Belt grip spray may also help resolve any noise coming from slipping or squealing belts.

    Noise probably from fan hub bearing on front cover - that is if all the other bits are up to it. Either replace the cover (about $450) or attempt a bearing replacement. The bearing is available from British 4WD in Hobart at about $110.

    Has someone actually done this bearing change?

    Could the process be outlined? It strikes me the centre of the fan hub shaft would have to be drilled out substantially to enable the hub mount to be removed without damage.

    Any takers?

    To elimate the viscous part of the hub, take the fan off for 5 mins on a cool day - a run around the block will be ok.
    Take off the A/C belt too - won't hurt the AC system either.
    Then you''l have a better idea of whats squeaking. If it appears to be the fan hub, you can inject some grease into the fan hub bearing using a grease needle (supercheap -$8) slide it in sideways, and that will keep it alive a bit longer.

    Also look for leaks with the turbo hoses.

    Of course the whirring noise could just be normal gearbox/TC noise - in which case as long as they have a sufficient amount of nice fresh oil they should be fine.

    Will check all that out, thanks mate!, it does sound like a turbo thing more than bearing, i think, probably both knowing my luck
