    Starter Motor's

G'day all, I have to buy a new starter for my 76 Rangie and was wondering wether I would be better to go for a high torque starter from this place http://www.castleauto.com.au/hs_dbas...FsbHNlYXJjaA== , around $440. Or go for a Magnetti Marelli for around $360 or a Bosch for somewhere between the 2. Any thoughts appreciated.

One thing Joseph Lucas ( before he married Magneto Marelli) seems OK at is starter motors.
The MM one are reasonably water resistant.
I have heard that the high torque ones are not .

Could be wrong here... but have heard from a couple of auto electrician's that the MM is generally a better unit and easier to get parts for..... I always thought it would be the other way around but!

Yeah I thought a starter built for a 4WD would be better than something based on a car starter. I don't like water but it is one thing I would like not having to worry about in regards to water ingress. Thanks guys

Mate id go the magnetti marelli as the hi tourqe jobbies are huge and may be a tight fit if you have extractors ..

Wouldent bother with the other brands as there no match for the magnetti or the hi tourqe ...

I fitted a magnetti to my 4.4 which came from a 3.5 and i recoed it then 2 weeks later i had a prob the bolts rattled loose and it moved and broke the alloy housing my fault as i must not have tightened it up enough but i fixed it with my mig and refitted it with some loctite on the bolts and i havent had a prob since

Tho my bro has a 3.5 county with a bosch and it is shyte have had it out and cleaned it up and it still has problems starting but we have a remidy for it now as we have a 4.4 with a hi tourqe to replace the under powered 3.5 and this will solve alot of his probs including the starter

I bought the MM starter motor (from L-R Spares in Mackay as I was in Townsville for work) about 12 months ago, largely as it was mid-price range, and I've been very happy with it as a replacement for the original Bosch. If it really is better sealed (and it appears to be) then that's a bonus. Graeme Harris in Mackay was very helpful too.

It turns out I could have bought a new Bosch a little bit cheaper here in Adelaide (rebuilding the original would have been more expensive) but I'm pleased with the MM unit.

Hmm, my 4.6 P38A has a high torque Bosch (it has an LR part no.) starter. It has no problem spinning my engine and it's smaller than older non-geared starters.

In fact, today we recommended it to a bloke who was building up a Rover powered MG.

Its a bit shorter and about the same diameter as the old lucas jobbie and no gear reduction am i right ???

If so its the same as the bosch one in micks county and its not all that old and its a POS

You can get a copy of the marelli made by another mob there not bad tho not as good as the marelli but there cheaper then theres the old school bosch or the starndard old lucas ive had em alland fixed em all tho ive never played with the hitourqe jobbie from the mob up in QLD but they rekon there about indestructable and them and the marelli and the replica marelli are tho only gear reduction type ive seen and id have to rate them the best as they dont work as hard and spin the engin alot faster making for an easyer start tho the big hitourqe is huge compaired to the marelli and like i said before may be a drama with some headers/extractors

No, smaller diameter with a built-in planetary gearbox - much the same as my old Honda motorbike starter.

What's wrong with Mick's? Why is it a POS?
