bang / clunk sound when rolling slowly in gear with clutch in

My disco has started to make a loud clunking or banging sound when rolling along in gear with the clutch pedal fully pressed in. It usually happens when rolling up to a red light in slow traffic. Its a bang bang bang sound that goes away when you take it out of gear. It only happens when everything is nice and warm after driving for a while. And occasionally if I shift to neutral and roll along with the clutch out you can still hear the same sound but very faintly.

The clutch needs some work as the pedal is very heavy and makes a groaning sound. I've been told the release bearing may need replacing.

Could the banging sound be related to the clutch? Or is it more likely to be something else.

The first thing I do whenever I hear drivetrain clunks is back off the handbrake on the drum and go for a drive.

It could be the cause or at least making drivetrain slack sound worse.

    You usually get a
    squeak, squeak, squeak
    then a crunch crunch crunch
before a bang bang bang, clunk clunk clunk
with bad UJs. But I guess there could be bad hearing involved.

    bang

my series rig had the same, was the hand break shoes installed with chamfer wrong way round and was catching. Also the spring pulling/keeping the break lever down once released had corroded off.

ive get the same sort of thing, did you end up getting this sorted out ?? my handbrake is allready pretty loose, but i think possibly old and cruddy, as it didnt look so good when i had it open during gearbox replacement.
