    Hot Hot Hot

Since changing my viscous cooling fan on my series 3 diesel to the original fixed drive fan the water temp seems to on the high side of the gauge almost touching the red.

is this normal for the 2.25 diesel moter to run hot or do you think the previous owner upgraded to the bigger viscous cooling fan to combat a overheating problem?

Is it safe to remove the thermostat and run it cooler? I am heading to stockton this sunday to help with the clean up so dont want to over heat.

I have removed the thermostat once before and the temp stayed in the lower quarter of the gauge. (more like forgot to put it back in)

Why not try a lower temp thermostat? What's in it now? 88 deg? Try 82 degrees.

And drill a 1/4" hole in the plate of the thermostat, prevents any air blocks.

It is possible the bigger fan may have been fitted to overcome an overheating problem, although overheating on this engine indicates a real cooling system problem, particularly this early in the summer.

First thing I would check though, is what the actual temperature of the engine is getting to - the gauges fitted to Series 2a/3 are not particularly accurate, and further, are susceptible to errors, for example, from a faulty earth on the voltage stabiliser (on the back of the speedo on the S3. A quick check for that particular problem is that it will cause the apparent temperature to vary when the instrument lights are on/off, and also with engine rpm, although the response in both cases is heavily damped. Ideally you should measure the actual temperature in the radiator header tank when at normal operating temperature (close to red). Should be around 75-80. (be very careful removing the cap to put the thermometer in). I would comment that with a new sender fitted the normal operating temperature of my 2a is near the red - and it is operating at the right temperature - either the gauge or the sender is out of tolerance, I suspect the new sender!

The major problems with running without a thermostat will be slow warmup and overcooling, but if removing it makes a difference, check the opening temperature of the thermostat, and that it is opening fully. If it is opening fully and at the correct temperature, then the thermostat is not a problem.

I did check the thermostat by boiling it on the stove it opend at approx 75 deg so I dont thing it is the thermostat. I think it is more along the lines of incorrect temp sender readings.. Also I have a second temp gauge but not connected. It is in the spot where the oil pressure, temp and amps meter is located in the center of the lower dash. what and where does the sensor go and do i need it ? the temp sender is coiled up in the engine bay. It is too long to fit in the original cylnder head hole so where does it go. ?

Also I forgot to mention i did join the cable from the ogiginal temp sender as it had cracked and become brittle so could the joins be causing funny signals.?

Last time I went to supercraa, oops nearly!!!SUPERCHEAP They had radiator caps with built in temp gauges, why havent these been available before???? Less than $30,easy way to check a faulty dash gauge.

Take yours in to match, there are a fair range for different sizes and psi ratings.

Usually removing the Thermstat results in the engine running hotter, the water moves through the engine and radiator too quickly to pick up heat from the engine and to dissapate heat through the radiator, try what LandyAndy said about drilling the 1/4" hole, Regards Frank.
