    300Tdi longevity

    Hi guys,

how long do people expect a 300 Tdi to last ?

I'm currently thinking of getting a Defender which has 330k kms on it. I have read that at about 300k miles is where they come to a realistic end of life.

What sort of things would be needing replacing at 350+ ? Turbos ? injectors/ pumps ? what about the cylinder lining and rings ?

    Thanks guys

300ks IMHO is about where, on a well looked after TDi engine I would be thinking it was time for new injectors and jiggery of the injector pump to get it back to speck... Maybe a set of turbo bearings/new turbo and just for poops and giggles a set of rings. oh ok lap the valves and kline the guides while your at it if you decide to go new rings.

i know several with over 400000 k on them now without anything other than the std scheduled service items.

i know of several that needed rebuilding before 300000 k

sclarkie has recently said that ancedotal evidence suggests main and big end bearings at 300000 in one of his posts.. this could come back to be something related to using cheaper oil filters and a std service interval instead of a severe service interval.

i aquired one approaching 300000 k so i am on the optimistic side myself.

    300tdi

Mine is a 96 update Disco. After the trip I made to the Cape I blew a head Gasket and just last week the clutch packed it in. The problem with the clutch was the retaining post speared itself through the fork ( photos attached) I re-inforced the new one by welding a washer in the appropriate place and replaced all components, using a heavy duty clutch plate out of the 130 which I sourced from England ( Craddocks) The job itself is awkward to say the least but with a little help from a friend it can be done in a couple of days. The Irwin Bolt Grips ( pictured ) are the best I have ever used on rounded nuts. The 15mm nuts on the top of the bellhousing were rounded ( not by me ) and the grips were the only way of extracting them.Believe me there is very little room to work in up there
    Cheers and safe driving

Seen that before dont envy you at all, do you plan to replace the fork or do you reckon the repairs going to hold it till the HD clutch plate lets go?
