 brake squeal
i am getting noise from my brakes when travelling up the road {brakes not applied} when you apply the brakes the noise goes ,i am going to try applying squeel free and see how that goes as i believe the problem is caused by the pads vibrating against the pistons in the calipers. has anybody else had this problem and is this the best way to fix it?

I have the same problem and it comes and goes as it wants. I asked the same question and was told the the pads are probably down to there wear line and might need replacing. I'm sure someone will have more information.
Mine does it and my pads have plenty of meat left. I roughed up the driver's side pads but have not got to the others yet so don't know if it helped or not.

whats happening is more than likely "pad rattle" its caused by the brakes releasing and then the pads are shaking between the rotor and the pistons
Providing there are no brake fluid leaks from the pistons its not something to panic over as it might just be as simple as the goop that tacks the pads to the pistons having let go and dried out (as previously mentioned)
HOWEVER.... it can also be caused by excessive bearing float in the hubs or damage to the rotor knocking the pads back too much or "washing" the pads around... since you have to lift it up to pull the wheels off to do the gooping on the pads do a rim rock check when you first jack the tyre up then repeat it with someone holding their foot on the brake pedal. Once youve got the wheel off before taking the pads out place a screwdriver down ontop of the pads to act as a distance gauge to the top of the rotor and then slowly turn the hub more than about .25mm of deflection from the tip of the screwdriver is bad. (note that the rotor might also have variations in thickness so check both sides of the rotor with the screwdriver.)
Even if theres nothing wrong with the discs/hubs that whole process takes less than 2 minutes extra to complete and IMHO since the brakes are kinda helpfull in day to day driving I think its worth the effrot to do it any time the wheels have to come off.

I've had an issue with brake squeal for a while now after fitting Bendix 4x4 rear pads ~ 3months ago.
There is nothing wrong with the braking capacity of these pads - they just squeal (in my special case)
Just a note - my rear brakes only squeal when they area applied, not whilst unused.
I have checked bearings, used anti squeal, replaced suspension bushes. Disks are not adversely worn.
Speaking to a few LR mechanics (friends) they have found that LR brakes seem to be more 'Highly Strung' in comparison to other makes in terms of squealing by mixing standard / non standard brake parts ie - standard rotors and non standard pads.
They believe its the difference in compounds between different manufacturers.
I believe this argument to be strange but possibly believable, basis being that they recommend a brand that comes out of the LR factory that is cheaper than some other well known brands when it concerns brake parts that they also stock.
Again, this is not an argument with proven integrity - but I have talked about it with different suppliers on a few occasions.
Just something to think about.
Cheers.
My next door neibour loves my rear brakes in the morning when I apply them just lightly as I leave the drivelway they squeel and they do the same for about 2 or 3 apps then it goes.
I put it down to light surface rust on the rotors but the same can also be caused by dirt and mud on the rotors or in behind the pads in between the pistons.
Im also with Dave on the wheel bearings and swivel pins, they can cause pad knock off which causes the pad to vibrate.

I have the same problem of brake squeel but mine happens about after 5 minutes of driving,
I touch the brake pedal and it stops.
I have taken the front and rear wheels off and thought the pads were down but they have at least 10 the 12mm of pad on each.
What is the this brake squeel goop called ?
Where can it be bought?
How is it applied?
Have never heard of it.
Thanks Ralph
