Thread: Basic tips to get more from the 300Tdi

    1. bolt it into a Disco

    2. make sure everything is adjusted properly, including valve clearances and intercooler hosing is all in good nick.

    3. exhaust, either cut out mufflers or replace with 3" straight through system to improove boost reaction.

    4. Injector pump tuning GET IT DONE PROPERLY AND FIT AND EGT GUAGE IF DOING SO

    5. LPG fumigation

    6. Variable vane turbo

    7. water to air intercooler

    8. TD5 conversion

Instandard form the 300TDI isnt that much different in on road performance than the V8 in the discos but the V8 is very easy to extract more power from for the speed freaks out there.

The only major differences between them is that the V8 has music coming from it's exaust but you need shares in a fuel company to run one unless its on gas and then there is the range issue.

Then there is the lag from the turbo, in traffic can be a pain but once on boost they are fine.

In standard form, the V8 makes a lot of noise but not that much mumbo either.

As far as comparing it to your modern diesels, dont bother, they will be sitting on the side of the road waiting for someone to come along with a diagnostics computer and a bag load of sensors while you drive past nice and slow in your nice simple mechanicly injected diesel.

The future is in the modern diesel engines with comon rai; and electronically metered injector pumps etc but with more adons comes more potential problems which can translate to major problems in remote locations.

My appologies to any TD5 owners, just my humble opinion that is all.

The valves and tappets have not been checked do you know it this is hard to do?

    Thanks

I didn;t mention the gearing in a disco is slightly different to the defer, henceforth a taller top end speed,

if you have the rave manual its in there otherwise go here( down below on the page), tappets are easy to do, let me think its the rule of nine or something like that,
this is a good one for timing belts

    even has photos

download this, its a 300tdi overhaul manual, page 39 tells you the valve order and the settings.

The old saying "How fast you want to go is relivant to how much money you have"

If you want a fast defender..... sell it and get a V8...

Defenders are not built for speed....... except the 200tdi i had

I have had a nice power increase (95bhp on a dyno) but reckon I can bring the fuel usage down and the off boost smoke with a bit of a play using the instructions

Most will recommend fitting an egt gauge if you are increasing the fuel, I have so I can keep an eye on temps

Maybe somebody can bump the instructions....I would but I'm on the blackberry

the best instructions for 'tuning' the fuel pump are here
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment...6&d=1152411367

It's a PDF file, but you will need a pyro/EGT readout to do it properly/safely. Ian Petersen is the man to talk to for an LED readout pyro http://www.thermoguard.com.au

Ohh a couple of minutes later..................

    BANG....................................

Thump thump, squeeel, scrape, grind come to a halt.........

110kmh Rear blow out... on the western hwy....

Camel_Landy was there, so we ripped the tire of and put the spare on and cruised off home at a more suited pace for a Defender.....

I must say, that was one of the most memorable trips i have ever done with Mark and Dane...

How much boost do the 300TDI's run stock?
A T25 will run up to 20psi before running out of airflow, provided you can get air to it and exhaust away from it well enough.
