Basic tips to get more from the 300Tdi

    Hi all,

Is there any quick tips to extract more oomph out of the 300Tdi.

I know that a new intercooler or turbo is the go but wondering if anything else is worth doing first.

By the way my 300 Tdi has done 225,000km and been regularly serviced. (I have only had it for 6wks)

    Thanks

    Mr Moocha,
whenever someone asks that question i sometimes wonder, its a diesel, how much more oomph do you want? Oomph is for V8's.
If the timing belt has been replaced on cue and the injectors are ok, what more do you need to do to it?

    my thoughts

Hey John you have got it in for me havn't you. You must only have ever owned a Landrover Diesel!

Like I wrote in my other post I have been spoilt with a Pajero 2007 Diesel 3.2 Turbo and a Subaru and have never felt so uncomfortable overtaking as I did in the Landy.

I didn't buy the Defender for a speed demon but it is my daily commuter and weekend adventurer.

Just to let you know the timing belt has just been done (by myself and Michael2) and it improved it slightly. Not owning it from new I am not sure how you can tell if the injectors are working as designed. Have run injector cleaner in the last few fillups but still seems the same.

Drive a newer diesel and you will think you are in a petrol car! Even Landrover have some great new diesels so can't wait for a Defender with the TDV6 or TDV8....dreaming.

no mate just a laughing dig

have had other diesels as well,

the defender experts will be able to clue you in better, than a disco driver, tdi discos go faster than yours.
and yea forgot to mention the muffler,
do a search the 3rd from the right ( Search tab) on mufflers/removal and the like and you will get a stack of posts regarding the mods you can do to the exhaust, as rangieman said they spool quicker.

    best of luck,

    john

Forgot to mention, i had a bit of a power problem with mine ( not a defender same motor) when i had the timing belt replaced they found out the thing was out by 2 cogs, now it almost goes like a V8.
As a suggestion, perhaps recheck your timing belt to make sure it is spot on and don;t forget to adjust the valves, that can make a difference too.

Have an LPG system installed, that'll make it go.

Going like a V8 hey you just told me diesels aren't like that! But we checked the timing by spinning the motor around a few times and it was spot on. So am pretty sure it can't be that.

The valves and tappets have not been checked do you know if this is hard to do?

    Thanks

I have removed both the muffler and resinator (probably should have left the resinator on...the cab noise has not really increase...outside has apparently, well so the neighbours say) along the pump tweaked and dyno'd

Search the site as there is a good set of instructions on tweaking if you want to do it yourself

I have had a nice power increase (95bhp on a dyno) but reckon I can bring the fuel usage down and the off boost smoke with a bit of a play using the instructions

Most will recommend fitting an egt gauge if you are increasing the fuel, I have so I can keep an eye on temps

Maybe somebody can bump the instructions....I would but I'm on the blackberry

The basics have been covered... i.e. make sure everything is as clean & as tight as it can be.

I suspect you're not going to get much more out of it without throwing big $$$ at it... and even then, it's probably not going to be much more. Also, just so that you're sure in your own mind, why not take another 300TDi 110 out for a spin. That way, you'll know if yours is down on power or not. I suspect not...

If you want a lot more power, an engine swap might be your best bet. Better still... Get another car as a fast runabout. If you make too many changes to the engine & drive train, you're going to have to compromise on something.

    So... What can you do?

    A larger intercooler will help.
Fit an EGR & tweak the fuel pump (best done with a larger intercooler too).
Discovery transfer box (the Disco has a higher Hi Range).
    GMC V8 Diesel.
    Rover V8 Petrol.
