    disco 1 stereo question

    Hello all,

Quick question. I have a 98 SE7 Disco tdi. I have finally gotten around to replacing the standard tape deck with my Kenwood Cd player. Problem is I have no idea of how to remove the original tape deck. It looks like you need a special tool that fits through the four holes in the front face of the tape deck to unclip it from the dash. Does that sound familiar to anyone??

Any help would be thoroughly appreciated.

    Cheers

Yes its a small tool that can be used for lots of different stereo's.

Need to find some small flat bits of tin or somthing similar about the length of a paddlepop stick, or maybe some realy thin screw drivers, slide them in and pull out stereo at the same time.

My jap import disco had the factory land rover (pioneer) head unit and it was held in with very small cap screws (allen key required) through 4 round holes near the corners of the face. Is that what you have?

    Hi Goldey,
The photo below should help you to understand what's going on behind those little holes in the front panel - I presume you've got the Eurovox radio?

4 small screw drivers inserted to a depth of about 25mm will work nicely. You just have to juggle them a little (sideways) to get the tabs to release.

The proper tool is just a U-shaped piece of rod so that one leg feeds into each of the two holes on one side of the radio - it's not much easier than the 4-screwdriver method.

    Two other options,

A piece of wire coathanger bent into a U shape and just wiggle them around till the clips disengage, I used this when I removed the original unit in mine and replaced with a Kenwood Head Unit.

The second is 4 kebab skewers, works as well but a bit harder to manipulate.

It would be the cut and join method, is there a better option?

If you don't want to buy an adapter cable then you can solder to the existing wires without cutting them or you can use crimp connectors and insert them individually into the existing plug.

I'd never cut the original plug out. It might cause you some pain later on.

4 50mm decking nails fit perfect. Grab the unit by the tape slot and wiggle out.

And now for the hijack.my deck has been dropping in and out of power. I have checked the coneections and all looks fine. Is this a sign that the unit is stuffed? I hope not because we resently replaced the stacker and it might be hard to get a new uinit with stacker controlls
