    R380 & LT230 Rebuild

    Hi Guys,

I am looking to get my G/box & TC rebuilt (95'D1 3.9V8 220K) due to excessive backlash & syncro wear.
It is just getting to the stage where it is annoying me - especially with centre diff in and throttling.

I am going to have a crack at rebuilding the TC with a mate, but was advised to get the G/box rebuilt by someone who has done them before as you needs some special equipment or jigs???

I believe I am going to need the cross drilled input gear and g/box main shaft.

What sort of cost am I looking at for a general rebuild, hoping that there is no gear wear etc???
    Who is recommended in Melb?
Are there any rebuild kits that people have used? And if so from where??

I will be pulling / replacing the box out myself.

    Cheers
    Dave.

    Recon R380

Hi Dave, when I had to repair my R380 earlier this year I was advised from several sources that it was almost impossible to source parts, bearings in particular, from anywhere except dealers. I ended up buying a "fully reconditioned" unit from All 4 x 4 in Kotara in Newcastle. I paid under $3000 with a good discount for being a regular customer. So far it is going well. The t/case seemed in good order so I didn't touch it. Apparently the R380 needs special tools to make the job manageable as well.Hope this helps. Cheers, 130man.

The TC will be approx $500 in parts - new bearings, shims and input gear.

    Now for the gearbox

    dave

sorry to hear you are going down the rebuild path too
im looking at a shot bearing, or 2, in a 300tdi only done 170k!!

$2700 for a reco on exchange has been the average of the quotes ive gotten so far, only got a few and waiting for a hand full of reply emails

best quote ive got so far is $1470 for a "low km" 2nd hand unit, $70 freight to melbourne. just not sure if i wanna go down that track

im not sure if a v8 box will cost more or less than tdi, doubt it'll be a huge difference tho

have you approached any transmission specialists?

    They are certainly exxy!

Haven't approached a Trans specialist as of yet - but will do next week.

Looks like the reco box is definitely pushing the budget.
I'll do some more parts research, and at least rebuild & shim the TC, that should help a lot.

    Dave.

Dave, i just pulled my 1st transfer down and put it back together, bearings seemed ok and input gear was acceptable...
it came from a Disco with an unknown amount of K's on the clock.

Its not hard... i was supprised....

input gear shimming is the hard part if you have to replace it. Go see Fred Smith, he will do it for you.

    Steve
