Head gasket failure?![]()
Hi everyone, sold a 200 TDI engine in good running condition to a customer a couple of days ago.
Customer fitted the engine, run it for a couple of minutes, pressure in the crankcase, coolant in the engine oil.
We suspected the head, customer got a other head tested and fitted same story, heaps of pressure, again water in the oil.
Apparently the bores looked like new, but if the head is ok, where else could the pressure be coming from.
Anyone ever had a TDI with cracks in the cylinder bores.
Any ideas,
cheers Richard

thanks, but he fitted a new gasket with the tested head, a mechanic friend did the work for him, there is not that much he could have stuffed up, but then again.
strangely the thing run ok before, we stored the engine for about 6 months, compression test is not showing any problems, bit of mystery to me.
Yeah i did
Cracked the cylinder in a 200 Tdi Disco engine in 1991
I had it fitted in a Range rover
mmm you could image how much a new short engien was for one of those in 91
But it did puzle me at first as it was losing water but could not find where it was going. But there was oil in the coolent. The sump oil was not cafe cream colour. But when we dropped the oil , about 5 ltrs of water came out before the oil . The water was there but never mixed with the oil
This was all caused by the coolent hose coming of the back of the heater and flooding the passenger foot well with hot water. And the engine overheating
The bore that was cracked was number 4 , which is normally the first one to check anyway

Did he get the right head gasket. as there are 4 differant ones for the 200 Tdi and you have to fit the one that was on there and not just anyone. Main reason if you put too thin a one on when it had a thick one then you risk the problems you have . It is ok the other way round
Along the side of the head the gasket sticks out and there is 1,2,3 or 4 holes in the gasket, this tells you which gasket you have to replace it with . If you had a 4 hole , which is the thickest, and you replace with a 1 hole , then the gasket is too thin and will still leak , might as well had pull a cornflakes package in there![]()

Thanks a lot,
The engine was reconditioned by turner england 120.000km ago, it is fitted with a temperature indicator which shows no overheating.
The customer tells me that the engine has got one hell of lot of pressure in the crankcase, don't know if a crack would account for that much pressure. He had oil squirting out of the dipstick tube.
cheers Richard

Bit hard to comment on the gasket used, the car is a couple of hundert km away from my workshop, we normally get ellring gaskets, that is what land rover sells as genuine.
How much pressure did your engine build up when your gaskets failed. The currently fitted head was measured and pressure tested, so should be ok.
The mecanic who fitted the engine had do change quite a lot of components, as the engine i sold was out of a disco and his truck is a defender.
so i better get some sleep, midnight is not to far of
Richard
just thinking, couldn't a faulty turbo leak exhaust pressure past its bearing and pressurize the crankcase.
