    1996 300Tdi won't engage low range.

    Hi Guys

A friend has just contacted me from the land of the long white cloud (NZ). He recently bought a 1996 300Tdi Disco Automatic (ex-Japan) and is having trouble engaging lo-range. It goes into diff lock O.K but not lo transfer.

    Any hints?

    Diana

Here is the transcript of the original email if it explains anything. I must also add that this fellow has 4 other Land Rovers, an S1, an S2, a Defender 90 and (I think) a P38a.

"Our NZ list seems to have gone quiet so I thought I would ask the oracle...

I have just bought a 1996 Disco 300tdi auto on trade me and everything seems really neat and tidy but I can't get it into low range.

I doubt if it has ever been used as it was a jap import...

My initial thoughts are linkages frozen...what do you think?

I can move the lever over into high range diff lock ok.

The auto is in neutral and stationery

    Thanks
    in advance"

Jap import ones have a lockout solenoid on the high/low lever so you cant move it unless in park/neutral. if it has failed you cant move the lever between ranges. The thing will never have been in low range in japland, so will probably need some oil on the linkages as well.

The jap spec ones have a lot of interlocking saftey stuff like you cant get the key out of the ignition without it in park, you cant get out of park without the foot brake on. You may need your foot on the brake for a range change too.(it's been a while since I sold my Disco)
