I did this in a fender.
There was no gas in my unit due to a leak... but it is illegal to vent it to atmosphere.
Fridgies can reclaim it.
After that just start removing everything, undo unions, remove fastners to body work and pull.
I kept the plumbing and was able to run from air box (filtered intake) to compressor (through an inline oiler). Then from AC high pressure outlet to the dryer, with some juggling the fender dryer enabled me to have high pressure in, 3/8 hose barb out and a threaded fitting for a 150psi safety release valve (theaded into the A/C pressure switch thread).
I didnt bother using a pressure switch on the recommendation of an air compressor expert. When the dryer can and 5 or so metres of hose gets to 150psi (pretty quick) the valve blows off pressure.
Very simple system, can T a tank in on the 3/8 hose at any time. No real need though as it will air my 235s from say 15 to 35 in bloody quick time? We also use the air to pump 44s for boat fuel... very efficient, could never go back to an ARB etc etc

Steve
