Been thinking about the County....
And i've come up with the next move..
Isuzu engine instead of the V8...
Why i hear you ask??
Lots of reasons.......
1. Its a Truck motor, What better than a lump of unreving steel to make the County rattle to bits
2. The economy benifet over the V8 will be so great that i cant see any other reason.....
3. The drivability on the Hwy and the short shifting due to no rev range will make it a breeze for the Missus
4. I will have to rebuild the driveline ever 100k due to vibrations on idle and that has to be a bonus
5. Its Japanese, what more could i want... a Toyota maybe?
6. It was only fitted in the County in Oz as LRA was the only ones to think of this great idea and the rest of the world including Rover thought it was crap.
I think that almost has made my mind up.... Yep its CLEAR...... the ISUZU is better than the Rover V8
What are you isuzu guys on????
I drove another Isuzu county today and was apalled again on how bad they are in everyday use and i can only think of 1 reason why LRA did it..... The Military is so hard on engines that the V8 would have never lasted in combat...
If they are soooooo good, why has the British army not got isuzu LR's???? Why is the Penal colony the only place to do it...
Remembering we are also the only country to make over priced, over powered cars that have no real place in the world.....
Why would anyone buy a $40k falcon when for the same money you can get a Euro car that is more compact and better designed and gets better economy?
Now that should get you going......

c'mon it's been 18 minutes![]()
So is it the zoozoo or the tin mouse??
I've been planning the 4bd1t for my '91 Disco for the last 2 years (money/gearbox etc) and still haven't driven one - i like surprises. Petrol stooped at $1.43 down the road today so I reckon the billion km's I get out of the diesel should pay for the conversion...and some fillings
Can't believe you haven't had any snappers! Maybe they're still on their way home![]()
We like Isuzu's you dont.
Big deal.

sounds like the ones you have driven need new engine mountsmine doesn't shake or rattle (well the motor does).

depends how much you paid really doesn't it?

haven't driven a 4BD1T then have ya? my 5 foot nothin wife can drive it no problems and loves it
4. I will have to rebuild the driveline ever 100k due to vibrations on idle and that has to be a bonus
not mine - 380k still going fine, not the armies either AFAIK
5. Its Japanese, what more could i want... a Toyota maybe? got me there...maybe LRA should have gone for a bedford motor?
6. It was only fitted in the County in Oz as LRA was the only ones to think of this great idea and the rest of the world including Rover thought it was crap. Any evidence of this?... not sure anyone has ever said it was crap, where or when was it ever evaluated outside of Oz anyway?
anyway, at the end of the day all defender owners of whatever type have something that only defender owners can understand... there just happens to be a few of us understand better than the others that the 4BD1 was the pick of the bunch

From what i know......
the isuzu is fine as long as its not idleing... all the damage is done at idle.. above that and i hear its fine....
But seroiusly... if its that good an engine then why were they not used elsewhere???
And the Turbo is excluded as no Factory Rover had a Turbo Isuzu version....
thats like the comparisome of a Rover V8 v a Chev V8..... The chev wins on HP due to Cubes.. but its not a better engine...
Seriously clarkie, if your ever in sydney and want to experience an isuzu powered 110 feel free to contact me on 0404372693 and we can organise a time. You WILL change your mind if not i'll buy you a slab and help you drink it.
Yes it has a turbo, but some v8s have holleys and extactors too. Yes my driveline has been replaced (motor has 450k), but that wasn't to do with vibrations, i wanted defender disc rear and a 24 spline arb in the front. The Spanish pos 5 speed did brake, but that was shearing the main shaft, not rattling to bits. I'm expeting to get atleast another 300k out of this driveline.
Dont know about unrevving as i have never had a tacho, but i can pull 130kph fairly easily (with 35 inch tyres), i have a 4 speed rangie box with .98 gearing and 3.54 diffs. Short shifting? i change into 4th at 75-80.
Another thing, are v8 countys quicker than td5 discos? Mine is, even with the 35s.
Horses for courses really. v8s are for women to drive around in, isn't that why you bought yours?![]()
