    D2 Td5 - Weird (scary) electrical issue...

Well car was serviced yesterday...no problem yesterday or today until...coming home tonight.

Pulled in at the shops, made a purchase, jumped back in - no start!

All normal warning lights came on and went off, including glow plugs, trun key to start position - dead silence. Twist key a few times - still nothing, say rude words, still nothing.

Pull bonnet, remove battery shroud, find butchered and loose cable running from earth post, get tools out "fix" connection - still nothing - didn't have time or inclination to trace this cable. Check fuse 23 (transmission) - not blown, replace, turn key, nothing then again and bingo!

"Helpful" passerby who claimed to be a mechanic said, "ooh yeah, reckon its your starter solenoid - they just go sometimes, think I heard it click". When I suggested that might be the glow plugs he said "no they don't make a noise". I replied that I know that but was referring to the glow timer relay...why do people assume that if you're wearing a collar & tie, you don't know a valve stem seal from a cardan joint?

Only had a new battery week before last, so don't think it was that (and have the auxiliary anyway running on an automatic solenoid for emergency starting).

...anyway, has anyone ever experienced this before? I really don't want this to happen far from civilisation.
    Cheers

mine did it just outside the bp station on burns beach road about 2 months ago... i turned it off an restarted (or tried) about 3 mins later... and nothing... waited a few minutes... and it cranked up... never done it since...

someone mentioned shop electronics can effect them a tad... but its never been looked at properly... i guess its just the td5 reminding you that its electronic...

other day down the freeway too... ALL of my lights on the dash came on for a second and then back off... didnt miss a beat tho... its just keeping you on your toes!

    Thanks

    Steve

It sounds like interference from a mobile phone mast / antenna. If so, it's a common problem with most makes of cars as the signals interfere with the immobilizer. The problem is more common on garage forecourts as mobile phone companies quite often hide their antennas inside the petrol station signs.

Breakdown firms cure the problem by towing the car 100yds down the road & trying again.

Hit the immobilizer / lock button on the key of mine at Carousel in Perth last Saturday - doors locked, indicators flashed three times as normal, and headlights came on low beam and stayed on. Pushed button again and lights went out. Hasn't done it since - I've been checking.

    Gremlins ????????
    Cheers .........

That's a feature! If you hold the lock button long enough the headlights stay on for a while so that you can see in the dark.

Let me guess - there was an Amcal chemist at that centre....their scanners interfere with the cars computer - the imobilisation aspect of the security system. LR know about it but wont admit it until you push them. I pushed them out of warranty (because its got nothing to do with the age of the vehicle) and they agreed to fit a whole new receiver and key pads - $3000 worth - free. In effect they change the frequency on which the key pads run. I think before the change they were 200mhz or so from memory.

Hit them up....tell them they have done it before out of warranty for free.

Interestingly the locals at the Amcal said that it also caused Mercedes to be towed also. I had to push the car 50 metres away to start, but on a bad day the signals from those scanners can travel a lot further.
