    gearshift problem on 92tdi disco

    Hi guys,
When my mate and I went down to the river yesterday to check out my boat (after working on it for the last 2 weeks -fixing up the electrics and various other bits).I kept on missing gears
It seems that the gate between 4th and 5th has disappeared. Also the spring for when your selecting reverse has been gone for ages(that was no probs),but the little bit of resistance between 4 & 5 has disappeared and its rather weird to try and find the gear that you want. When my mate drove it home,he also commented on the way the gearshift felt.
Any ideas on how easy(read difficult) it is to fix the problem. Thanks guys.

There is a shift centralising plate that attaches to the top of the shifter housing, and is the stop point for the two centralising springs. These break often, buy a new one, don't try and weld up the old one as they continue to break. The new ones are also modified slightly to try and m,ake them last. This is a common problem,, and affects R380 and LT77 boxes. AFAIR the part numbers are different between LT77 and R380, but they are identical parts.

The plate and springs etc are under the aluminium cover held down with 2 phillips screws, be careful not to loose the plunger for the reverse lamp switch in the LT77 as it sometimes drops out when removing the ally cover and disappears down intp the drain you parked on top of....The only Pain is having to remove the console and drill out the rivets holding in the rubber floor seal to get to it. Fitting isn't too hard, just be careful not to crossthread the screws holding the springs when re fitting, as the spring tension is quite high.

Sorry I can't remember the part number, but it is called ' shift plate' or 'shift centralising plate ' or something similar.

There is also a trick to how you hold the springs -with vice grips - to control the tension whilst lining up the retaining bolts and also the method to setting it so the gear stick is centred. It is explained reasonably well in the gearbox manual. I have also has the railko bush at the selector end of the gear stick disintergrate which had a similar feel. This bush is a $7 part and about 1-2 hours work as the whole selector casing needs to be removed to push this bush in from underneath (What were they thinking) :-(. Easy enough but not sure if the '92 disco has a similar set-up to the '98.
