    Disco Speedo Sensor

I have been getting really good at guessing my speed lately since my speedo stopped working 4 weeks ago, but with the good 'ol police blitz's coming up, thought I had better do something about rectifying the problem.

So I have been shopping around the country for a replacement speedo sensor part number YBE100540, for my Disco. Have had quite a variance with pricing ranging from $175 down to $132. - didn't bother with the dealers. I now have one on order - should arrive Monday .

Are there any tricks or surprizes with replacing one of these...I have read the various links on this and other forums and seems straight forward enough but just wanted re-assuring before coping an eye-full of gearbox oil or similar.

I know you might already have done this - but check the various fuses. Under dash fuse 14 handles supply to the sensor - I had some wires rub against the transfer case and short out - the sensor itself was fine. As for oil, I've taken mine out whilst parked facing downhill and there were no probs.

Are you also replacing the sealing O ring? P/N 571665

You shouldn't get any oil out of the opening, but you will find it so much easier if you have the use of a pit, so you can get your hands above you & not sideways if you lay on your back.
You sort of need 2 x Universal Joints in your arms.
I didn't, & found it a really crap job to get the set screw out & in again (Loctited in I think ) as you need to work in behind the hand brake drum, & there seem to be bits & pieces in the way to get a good straight go at it. A flexible shaft would help.

It is difficult to see in there to align the tiny shaft key.

The best price I found for the VSS was A$80.81 +Postage ex UK (GBP 32.52)

    Well,
Changed the Sensor yesterday evening.. and it works..Phew!!
Took 10 mins in total using a long shaft 3/16 allen key and a small 6" shifting spanner to turn the shaft of the allen key within that confined area - a hex drive would of made it a very simple job.. but where's the challenge in that

Thanks for the input from the forum

I have cleaned them in the past with contact cleaner and they have been fine. They get filth and water etc in them and a bit of a clean and away they go.
