    M+S + Gear selection

    Hi all,

    I own a 2004 DII TD5 S Auto.

Three days ago the ABS, HDC & Traction control lights stayed on after starting... This happened twice, (after waiting 5 min between starting). I checked the manual- that says it's most likely a problem with the Traction control/ABS system (duh!)....

Anyway, I had to be somewhere- so I took the 'risk' of driving without the aid of ABS or TC . The lights stayed off upon starting the car on my return journey and I haven't had the problem since.

However...I was driving home from work this evening when all of a sudden the m+s lights plus the 'D' transmission light and the red dot next to the D on the gear lever started flashing. Nothing seemed wrong with the car (i.e drove about 3kms to the next place I could stop- all was normal apart from the lights?). After turning the car off for 5min the problem seemed to dissapear... so I drove the last 15km home with no issues???

I checked out a couple of other m+s threads where some suggested it could be the battery on the way out... does anyone have any other suggestions?? I realise the manual talks about a transmission fault. If it is this...what sort of $$ am I looking at to have it repaired?

    Thanks!

Not had that before but it does look like the car is trying to tell you something!!! Could it be temperature related?

Now I'm guessing here but I'm assuming that there's a an oil cooler fitted somewhere for the transmission oil. It might be worth checking to make sure that the fins in the radiator aren't blocked with mud or something.

The other thing that might be worth doing is to flush the gearbox oil & change the filter. Remember to check the condition of the oil while doing so as that will give you indicators if something is wrong.

Yes - check your battery - properly! I had little or no symptoms of a problem, but when checked professionally it had a collapsed cell. After investigation the control module does have the capacity to monitor and sense low voltage and can throw the M&S light problem. Although it could also be related to a poor earth somewhere.

It has only occurred twice since then for me, but there is also the issue of the position sensor for the gear selector - but I am told this is a fairly easy fix.

I also had an issue with TC, ABS, HDC & CDL lights coming on- battery fixed this and the CDL was down to the CDL switch wiring rubbing on the propshaft.

    Good luck.
    Cheers
