Cheap winch or good 2nd hand one?

You need a lot of cable to make it work as well as a minimum of 4x snatch blocks (the diagram shows 8x snatch blocks). You also need the trees to be in just the right place!!!

Thing is, if you've got access to that many snatch blocks, chances are, you've got another truck with you... You might as well get them to give you a tow.

FWIW - A shovel, hi-lift and sand ladders/waffle boards are by far the most effective for most situations. A long rope (and knowing how to use it) will also make a useful addition. If you're traveling with others, just make sure you've also got some shackles and some different length ropes (1m, 5m, 10m and maybe a 20m somewhere in the group).

Nope... Impossible with 2x blocks. You'll just stretch the car!!! You might be able to get away with 3x blocks but it's going to depend on the situation.

Remember... That's also assuming you've got anchor points in just the right place. ;)

If you're not in a hurry, worm drive is the way to way to go. No brake to cause heat (slightly different approach to other low mounts).

It depends on the situation but there's a number of ways...

If you can still move the car but need to turn it, you can use it on a tree to pivot the car around the tree (you can also use the same technique to get the car out of a rut).

If you have a hi-lift, you can then use the hi-lift as a winch. Short rope from the car to the hi-lift and then the long rope from the hi-lift to the tree (3x wraps of the rope around the tree will be enough to anchor). Take up the slack in the rope on the tree & then winch a couple of foot on the hi-lift... Then repeat. Slow but very effective.

If using the hi-lift to cast off, use the rope to steady the car and control the direction of fall.

Hmm...do you use rated rope? I wouldnt rely on any old rope...but I guess people can do what they think is ok.

Yep... A proper, decent rope with hooks on each end. Plasma, with a couple of hooks spliced into each end, can be quite handy too.
