In the same way that turning on a light is a short...

The coiled wire with DC current running through it will magnetise the object in the centre. Don't use the screwdriver across the terminals :o just the wire.

Yes it will sparkle a bit but it only takes breif contact to develop the magnetic field, you won't need to hold it on the battery for more than a moment.
Dropping/hitting it will usually lose it's magnetism.

So will the household voltage do the same trick but quicker?

Nope, AC will de-magnetise, and cause lots of sparks/smoke etc ;)

You are dead right, instead of attracting it pushed my hand away but there was very pretty blue lights ! :D

my LT77 in the 'fenderhas a magnetic plug on the gearbox.. every time i change the oil a little bit more synchro from second comes out :(

still. replacement sometime (hopefully soon) after christmas.

pulled a 3" long section of bearing cage out of a CAT 793C off highway dump truck once.. came from the diff magnetic plug.

I have never tried it but leaving metal exposed to a magnet for a perid of time does the same thing doesn't it? Or am I just mad?

I have a few small magnets lying round and thought of using epoxy to fit one on the top of the plug but would worry about it coming loose in the box.
