Auto Probs

Hi All,

I am having problems with the box in my TDi disco, when you first use the car after sitting for some time it is very reluctant to change out of first gear, usually requiring revving past 3500rpm, but once it does do the first change all seems well again. Trying a manual change makes no difference.

Have also had a problem with the inhibitor switch not allowing the car to fire of late, although this seems to have gone away once the gear change issue showed up.

Is there any connection?

Any ideas on what the problem might be and what sort of $$$ involved.

Just a bit of history, full oil and filter changed about 40K ago, and the clock has just ticked over 192K.

Id firstly check all elec conections going to the slushbox then spray em all with some lanox as there may have been some water or oil got in them ...

Then check that the vacume servo lines are in tact at both ends then have a look see if the kick down system is workin freely as it may have a dodgy or crap filled cable liner tho yours may not have a kick down cable

Have a look at the UK Ashcroft site.
You will see that this is usually a symptom of a sticking governor.
You can replace the governor, but it is a sign of impending ZF death.

Ahh...... they're hydraulically controlled and aslong as the shifter shifts, their ain't much in the way of electric goodies, nor is their any vacuum points, but their most definately is a kickdown cable

sounds like crap in the governor, its off to MRs next week so will get them to have a look at it, might have been some crap dislodged by a bit of rough road and some big bumps up Beerwah way on Saturday

Hopefully its not crap from parts of the box disintrgating, if so it may be bye bye for the old girl

Check your kick down cable first, sounds like Im repeating myself but having a drop in line pressure can cause problems like that but I would be puting money on the govener as well.

The kickdown cable should feel firm not loose but not too tight, I think the adjustment is something like 5 - 10 mm from contact but someone else may be able to verify/shoot down in flames that.
