    Nov 2004 Discovery Classic

    Hi Guys,
Having just upgraded to a Discovery, I was a bit concerned first time off road with some strange noises coming from the engine bay. When traveling on some very uneven rutted ground, a sound simillar to sucking on a straw to get the dregs out of an empty milk shake came from the front of the vehicle. I assume its a compressor kicking in as it only runs for short burst and is something to do with stability control . Vehicle has been back to Landrover dealer and they couldn't find the noise.

The sound just seems rather course and I was wondering if its normal and should I be able to hear it so clear in the cabin.

    Cheers

That would more than likely be your traction control kicking in, did you notice a TC symbol light up on the dash at the same time? If you lock your centre diff in the traction control does not have to work as much

    Thanks Guys.
I hadn't engauged the traction control and are still getting used to all these new gadgets. Used to the old Series 1 where you just hit the yellow knob and put the pedal to the metal.

    Hi Mate
Sounds like traction control doing its thing.
Is it a 7 seater? They have self leveling air suspension on the rear, may be the air compressor doing its thing.
Its probably normal stuff, ask for a local AULRO D2 member to join you for a drive, they will soon tell you if its normal or not.
Im guessing you aint nowhere near Williams WA,If you are heading thru town on the way to Perth, call in will see what I think!!!!

If it makes a noise like a Cane Toad that`s quite normal,it`s the Traction Control cutting in automatically you may see the TC light come on but it goes off very quickly so you might miss it.
Engaging the CDL with the engine running still retains the ABS&TC functions.
If the engine is off you revert to the CDL without the other tricky bits.
Up to you.TC is usually pretty good but you can find it has trouble with sticky, slippery, muddy conditions. Then I would just go for CDL.

2004 Disco dont disable TC in any conditions...

TC doesnt have trouble anywhere as opposed to disabled...
