Just picked up 10L of the PM Lubricants 421 Synthetic Eviro Turbolife 15W-40 oil. Will put it in on the weekend. I will let you know how it goes.
I use the Penrite 5W/40, meets the A1 B1 grading and it's $85 for 10ltrs

Sorry your right i dont have a TD5, a V8, nor do i have a TD5 owners manual, only castrol/fuchs reps and manufacturers to go by which i talkt o/deal with every day, if not a oil suited to a deisel a 5 w infact is not a good idea to be putting in a late model deisel engine, i dont deal with valvoline thus i assumed (bad idea on a forum) that it was a standard synthetic oil for motor vehciles, there is more to oil these days than just what it says on the bottle and what works in your mates engine, from memory castrol recommend to use an FMX which meets all the latest european standards in 10w30 guise, these guys dont just pull these oils out their asses and say oh yeah lets put this in htis car and see how it goes. Sorry if i sound cocky but forums have just been ****ing me off lately.
Modern diesel engines need far different oils to older models for injector actuation, startup etc... depending on configuration.
TD5s are recommended thus by 3 suppliers
Penrite - Diesel 5
Caltex (OEM) - Havoline Synthetic 5W40
Mobil - Delvac 1 (5w40) OR Mobil 1 0-40w
Older style engines ala 4.2 Patrol use a 15-40 oil.
And FUCHS recommend
TITAN SUPERSYN 5W40.....

I've been in Fluid power/Lubricant industry a long time....
We dealt with all the big players....
Its ok, you passed on what a company representative recommended, thats cool...
Personally, I use Penrite, but any of the others in the right range are suitable and wont affect warranty or induce unnecessary wear on a tight tolerance diesel like the modern unitary or common rail models.
FYI, thick oils in engines like the Jackaroo diesel will render it unstartable in cool climates.
again, the Xw part (eg, 5w,10w, 15w, etc)
refers to an oils pumpability at low, ie. sub zero temps.
A 5w-40 oil is roughly the same viscosity at running temp as a 15w-40, (and sometimes higher) and some 15w-40's are actually thinner at 0*C than some 5W-40's as these numbers represent a range an oils viscosity may fall in, they aren't absolute numbers.
An oils actual viscosity is measured in centistokes (cSt), and it's pumping pressure measured in centipascals (cP).
