Could be...
that the wiring to the switch might be in place and have fallen onto the front uni flange, cut through, and makes momentary contact? It should be retained on a clip on top of the transfer.
I would check ur brake light switch for the c contol, they are a common fault. Check the light r workin properly and that they extinguish properly, and that its not too sensitive. Let me know if they are I'll tell you my solution!
Failing that, perhaps a fuse is blown - does the diff lock light come on with the brakes? Some weird things happen if there is a blown fuse I've been told, as the power tries to re-direct itself to strange places!
