    One Ton Steering Box

    Hi all,
Would anyone know where I might be able to find a one ton series steering box? Or even better... does anyone have one? The standard series steering box is 3.5 turn lock to lock and I'm looking for the 4.5 turn one.

I've got some larger tyres on the way and I'm dreading the offroading in my car particularly when I engage the front locker!

You will find that the steering box from a Series Stage 1 Isuzu is a different ratio than your v8 and will probably achieve what you are trying to do.

When I engage the front locker with the 30" Muddies I have on at the moment, the steering gets very heavy... It will only get worse when I fit the 33" claws that are on the way. I have been told that this steering box is a pretty good alternative to power steering.

    No good at Armstrong steering???

I would try it without changing it first, I had a SIII SWB with 33's and Front locker and found it OK (and i'm no He-Man )

If your going to all that effort, you may as well do the 60's LC steering box swap and go full power steer - you won't regret it.

    Cheers
    Dave.

That particular part may be quite difficult to acquire in Australia.

To my knowledge there was only ever a single "1 Ton" privately imported into Australia, that was a Rover factory prototype and I would love to get my hands on it if it still exists.

Your best option would be to retrofit the power steering from a Defender.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

The 60's LC option is far easier option.
    No need to cut/move/notch crossmembers.
    All bolt on if required.
    Only steering arms need fabricating.

    Cheers

I believe that there are a few 1 ton chassis (ambulances etc) becuase the army chassis is a hangover from the 1 ton project, but as you said no complete vehicles bar any private imports.

Is that true??? I think it is the other way around military chassis first then 1 ton chassis at about the same time as the S2B Although the S2A Forward Control may be the prototype for the military chassis.

I know that the Series 2a Forward Control (main chassis), S2a military chassis and the S2a/S3 1 Ton chassis are all essentially the same. The difference being the rear cross member is unique to each, the 1 ton having a regular civilian cross member.

However I thought the different ratio steering boxes were only on the vehicles originally fitted with the 9.00 X 16 tyres?

BTW: the 1 Ton "steering unit assembly" is part number 552790, does anyone have a military parts book to check the component on the military and ambulances?

G'day All, My understanding was Mil/spec chassis then 1 Ton types, cheers Dennis
The part numbers are 509449 (early type St/box suffix A) and 551702 (late type suffix C) and 1 Ton steering boxs are scarce on the ground in the UK as well, any 1 Ton parts are usually snapped up by enthusiasts, check out the Series 2 club website, cheers.
