Sounds like it might have been a bit of a sloppy install. None/few of the army fitted holdens seemed to be done "nicely" See if you can tidy it up somehow.

Mines a 73 SWB s3 with a 186. I added a toro overdrive, and it sounds better at over 50 km/h however the top speed hasn't really changed. I got 91 km/h without OD, and 94 km/h with.

Mind you - my engine is tired too.

that doesn't sound right, most overdrives should provide about 27% gearing increase when engaged, but if the engine is tiered I suppose it mightn't have the puff to push it.

I'm being a little off thread with this post. However I recently had Inc. upload the original booklet supplied with the Johnson's Holden Engine Conversion kit.

Although that said - I wouldn't be using the Johnson modification for the clutch, I would be going a completely different route by changing the pressure plate.

It's maths, Phoenix. Gearing changes torque but not power (power = torque x rpm. Use a gear to increase RPM by 25% and you also decrease torque by 25%). So adding overdrive only moves the RPM down, to a more economical point It would only give increased speed if gearing was the limit - and in reality it's lack of power and lack of aerodynamics. You'd get more speed out of removing the roof, folding the window flat and fitting a cover over the unused seats and load space - like a 30's sports car. Just add leather helmet and goggles.
