How old is the oil ??
I can generally notice a difference after an oil change - gearbox becomes smoother. (and I like smooth things :D:D)

With a Series 2 or 3 they would say if it will start off in 3rd gear the clutch is stuffed.

Wife just rang a couple of minutes ago - no clutch, pedal not returning.
Master cylinder is still full. (was exchanged with a stainless sleeve a few months ago) - hoping slave cylinder but with no fluid loss, some how don't think so.
I suppose next suspect is the clutch fork - Any other ideas ??

Hmmm - if it has a helper spring that will hold the pedal down if there is no load, and there will be no further loss of fluid except for one stroke with the pedal down. So it could be the slave cylinder.
But I'm afraid your diagnosis is probably the right one!
