How would one tell if the clutch is dying ? (02 defender 110)
It slips under load![]()
Or take it to a Stealership and they WILL TELL YOU IT NEEDS REPLACING![]()
Like rovercare said, the most likely indication would be if it slips under load, particularly when going up hill in the higher gears (like 4th or 5th on full power). You might also be able to smell the clutch burning if it's slipping, if it's really bad then you might even see smoke!!
Other clutch related problems can be juddering when you let the clutch out due to oil contamination or broken springs in the clutch plate itself.

Or it could be doing nothing and then just self destruct.
As it came out of the bell housing(BigJon may remember this one), fortunately it wasn't mine - but now doing sterling service as a wind chime

Sure do...
The problem i have is when i select third gear it is *very* easy to... grind ? Its not a grind as in crunching the gears, but it just has a little nibble. My Vehicle inspection said third synchro was slow, but "considered serviceable"
you might also notice a little hesitence as it takes up and a very very slight sponging in the pedal near as you disengage the clutch through its normal friction point.
very very occasionally a clutch that slips and grabs can be the throwout bearing binding on the shaft on release and while the clutch may servicable while this is happening it wont take long for it to become not servicable.

Mine does the same 2nd to 3rd. It is usually more noticable when it is cold. When it heats up it is nowhere near as bad. I thought it may be clutch problems.
I was with the owner of the wind chime when it let go out in the Simpson last year and do not want to suffer a similar fate when I head out there again next year.
